OAE’s The Moon Hares is hopping good fun

Like all the best fairy tales, The Moon Hares looks at the darker side of human nature through a lens of magic and surrealism.

The Orchestra for the Age of Enlightenment (OAE) brought their latest family-friendly operetta last night to Southbank’s Queen Elizabeth Hall. An ambitious production, The Moon Hares combines the talents of a live orchestra, high school rock band, adult choir, and 3 children’s choirs to stunning effect.

In the story, a teacher comes to a village and discovers her students have never been outside at night. A wise man reveals to her that should anyone be touched by moonlight, they would magically transform into a hare until sunrise.

But, there’s more than meets the eye. Like all the best fairy tales, The Moon Hares uses fantasy to reveal the darker side of human nature. The town’s authorities must soon choose between safety without magic and their freedom for the price of vulnerability.

While opera and children are two items not usually paired, the OAE has beautifully constructed The Moon Hares to be accessible and entertaining for families of all ages.

The fusion opera weaves baroque composer Henry Purcell’s music with new songs and libretto from James Redwood and Hazel Gould, as well as spoken word and uncomplicated stage design.

Younger audiences will find the fantastic dance sequences from the young Acland Burghley students particularly exciting.

The exceptional choirs breathe electric life to the story, from the seasoned professionals to the small school children. Some songs will stick with you long after the show has ended. Especially enjoyable are Yes, Mister Mayor and Eight Hours.

The Moon Hares is clever in that it explores the ideas of adventure while at the same time celebrating the bringing together of people with different life experiences.
