This deliciously decadent hot chocolate recipe is a hug-in-a-mug and the kryptonite to any bad day. My kids absolutely adore this recipe, and they can even make it themselves in the microwave. We use Green and Blacks Organic because it’s the most rich and chocolatey tasting.

If your kids are making this recipe, remind them never to put anything metal in the microwave. Then they’re good to go!

There is something about a warm drink on a cold day that is pure magic. Maybe it’s the nostalgia of winters gone past, or maybe it’s all the antioxidants in the dark chocolate doing their good work on our health.

250 ml milk, 4 tsp Green and Blacks Organic Hot chocolate
  • Microwave 1 min 40 seconds. Stir again

    15 g mini marshmallows (approx 30), 20 g Anchor Light squirty cream
  • Sprinkle with cinnamon and enjoy!
    ¼ tsp cinnamon

Notes

This recipe makes one serving at a time, so you can duplicate it for however many people you wish. You could also substitute the cinnamon for a swish of chocolate syrup on top. For adults, you can stir in some coffee for an extra caffeine hit.

A note on the cooking time: my children don't like their milk very hot, so they cook it about 1 min 40 seconds. I like mine much hotter and cook up to 2 minutes.

I would suggest checking the milk's temperature before you put the marshmallows/whip cream in the first time you make it, especially as all microwaves differ.
Keyword Hot chocolate

My youngest is 10 and there is nothing he likes better than hot chocolate. We often just mix up the Green and Blacks with warm milk whenever he’s feeling a bit low. Other times, we have a it as a treat, or as a reward for a job well done. Adding marshmallows, whip cream and cinnamon definitely turn this drink from an after school snack to a full-on dessert!

Playtime Idea

Hosting a playdate or looking for an activity to keep little hands busy? As you’re preparing the hot chocolate, get the kids to decorate a gingerbread man to have alongside it. They’ll love dipping it in afterwards.

Make it your way

There’s lots of ways you can adapt this hot chocolate recipe. Swirl on some salted caramel sauce or chocolate syrup for a dessert-like experience. Or perhaps grate a wedge of Terry’s chocolate orange on top of the whipped cream. You could even stir with a peppermint stick at Christmas time.

One last idea – add a shot of espresso for a luxurious caffeine hit. Or maybe put a dash of Bailey’s in for yourself to curl up on the couch with. Who says kids have all the fun?
